Phylogenetic Relationships among Palearctic and Nearctic Whitefish

چکیده

We recently documented the existence of two highly distinct mitochondrial DNA (rntDNA) phylogenetic groups of Coregonus sg. in Beringia in the absence of geographic separation. Po test whether this resulted from secondary intergradation of two groups that evolved in allopatry in Eurasia and Beringia, rntDNA restriction-fragment-length pslyrnorphisms of 21 0 whitefish representing 22 populations from Europe and Siberia were compared with rntDNA variation observed among 581 fish from North America. Results confirmed that Beringia represents a zone of secondary contact among endemic whitefish and a group of Eurasian origin. All Beringian populations clustered much more closely to Eurasian populations than other North American ones. We also compared mtDNA variation among Palearetic populations with that observed in North America. European populations clustered into two major rntDNA groups that exhibited a strong geographic pattern of distribution, independent of the rnorpholsgica[ variation observed among populations: awe dominated all the more northern populations and extended to Alaska-Yukon; the second largely dominated samples from central alpine lakes, and was absent from Beringia. These resuits suggest that central alpine lakes and northern Europe were postglacially recolonized by two genetically distinct whitefish groups that most likely evolved in al lopatry followed by limited intergradation.

Phylogeny and historical biogeography of Agabinae diving beetles (Coleoptera) inferred from mitochondrial DNA sequences.

The Agabinae, with more than 350 species, is one of the most diverse lineages of diving beetles (Dytiscidae). Using the mitochondrial genes 16S rRNA and cytochrome oxidase I we present a phylogenetic analysis based on 107 species drawn mostly from the four main Holarctic genera. Two of these genera (Ilybius and Ilybiosoma) are consistently recovered as monophyletic with strong support, Platambu...

Molecular phylogeny of the marmots (Rodentia: Sciuridae): tests of evolutionary and biogeographic hypotheses.

There are 14 species of marmots distributed across the Holarctic, and despite extensive systematic study, their phylogenetic relationships remain largely unresolved. In particular, comprehensive studies have been lacking. A well-supported phylogeny is needed to place the numerous ecological and behavioral studies on marmots in an evolutionary context. To address this situation, we obtained comp...

Parallel evolution in ecological and reproductive traits to produce cryptic damselfly species across the holarctic.

The damselfly genus Enallagma originated in the Nearctic, and two Nearctic lineages recently underwent radiations partly associated with multiple independent habitat shifts from lakes dominated by fish predators into lakes dominated by dragonfly predators. A previous molecular study of four Palearctic morphospecies and all representative Nearctic species identified the presence of two cryptic s...

Phylogeny and evolutionary history of queen polymorphic Myrmecina ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

The phylogenetic relationships in the myrmicine ant genus Myrmecina were analyzed using 1,281 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene. Intermorphic queens observed in M. graminicola (Europe), M. nipponica (Japan), M. americana (North America; reported for the first time) and M. sp. A (Java) were reconstructed as an ancestral trait in this genus. Molecularclock-based age estimates su...

DNA Barcode Libraries Provide Insight into Continental Patterns of Avian Diversification

BACKGROUND The causes for the higher biodiversity in the Neotropics as compared to the Nearctic and the factors promoting species diversification in each region have been much debated. The refuge hypothesis posits that high tropical diversity reflects high speciation rates during the Pleistocene, but this conclusion has been challenged. The present study investigates this matter by examining co...
